Osteopathy treats malfunctions. Most often a problem occurs when there
are already three or four other problems which until then the body managed
to compensate. As soon as one more problem adds up to the others the organism
is not able to cope with it any longer and as a consequence the ailment
occurs.
Therefore it may happen that your therapist for example treats tensions
in the nape of the neck on the front part of your body, because he found
out that the tension of the chest muscles permanently pulls your shoulders
to the front. So the tension in the back of your neck is a result of the
permanent attempt to pull back the shoulders. And you were perhaps wondering
why the treatment of your neck and shoulders always merely had a short-term
relieving effect.
When your neck and shoulders have improved the therapist will try to find
out the cause of the bad posture of your shoulders. Perhaps you will have
mentioned heartburn or frequent burping during the first examination so
that the cause of the bad posture may be some trouble of the stomach,
which via the oesophagus (which stretches from the stomach to the cervical
spine) permanently subjected the region of your neck and shoulders to
tension.
By means of a treatment of your stomach through smooth techniques the
therapist enables the stomach and oesophagus to glide and straighten up
again.
This example is, of course, oversimplistic, but it is meant to give you
an idea of how an osteopathic therapy might proceed.
