An osteopathic examination and treatment will always be adapted to the individual’s complaints. This means that the treatment procedure will vary from session to session and from patient to patient.

What is so special about osteopathic treat-
ment is that it takes into account the entire organism and examines and treats the patient with a certain kind of manual
therapy / physiotherapy.
With his/her hands the therapist senses tension(s), wrong positioning in the body, hindrances to movement, and functioning
of tissues and treats them using certain manual techniques.

Consulting an osteopath

The focus of an osteopathic examination and treatment will always be the human being and not the desease in the first place. Therefore it is important for the therapist to get to know your reason for consulting him and every bit of information on possible causes for your ailments.
This also implies your current circumstances of life as well as your personal history.
Especially important is information concerning the duration of the problem, descriptions of qualities of pain and whether and where it spreads. Statements on what time of day and positioning the pain is most felt and on previous and continuing therapies make a difference.

All these criteria will be demanded from you during the thorough first examination.
Though the acute suffering stands in the foreground it is most crucial for the osteopathic therapist to re-activate the self-healing ability of the body. This is why he/she will always take into account the entire body and not only those parts where the pain has manifested itself.

How the osteopath works

Osteopathy treats malfunctions. Most often a problem occurs when there are already three or four other problems which until then the body managed to compensate. As soon as one more problem adds up to the others the organism is not able to cope with it any longer and as a consequence the ailment occurs.
Therefore it may happen that your therapist for example treats tensions in the nape of the neck on the front part of your body, because he found out that the tension of the chest muscles permanently pulls your shoulders to the front. So the tension in the back of your neck is a result of the permanent attempt to pull back the shoulders. And you were perhaps wondering why the treatment of your neck and shoulders always merely had a short-term relieving effect.

When your neck and shoulders have improved the therapist will try to find out the cause of the bad posture of your shoulders. Perhaps you will have mentioned heartburn or frequent burping during the first examination so that the cause of the bad posture may be some trouble of the stomach, which via the oesophagus (which stretches from the stomach to the cervical spine) permanently subjected the region of your neck and shoulders to tension.
By means of a treatment of your stomach through smooth techniques the therapist enables the stomach and oesophagus to glide and straighten up again.

This example is, of course, oversimplistic, but it is meant to give you an idea of how an osteopathic therapy might proceed.

The first examination

The first examination will take about an hour. We will speak about the reason of your consultation and I will ask you several– more general as well as more specific - questions concerning your ailment.

After that I will carefully and thoroughly examine your body to get a general impression and todetermine the nature and intensityof the problem and perhaps carry out hand treatment in the remaining time.

The next level of treatment

The reaction of the patient’s body to the treatment with the hands in the first examination is decisive for the next level of handling. Depending on the acuteness of the problem, it may be necessary to strengthen the body’s general ability for balancing.
In order to achieve this, other parts of the body will be brought into consideration, and I will give you advice and exercises for your everyday life I am also very much concerned that you get the feeling that you have your body under control.

The reaction to osteopathic treatment may occur within the following two weeks, until your body has found its balance. In case of acute pain the handling will be more frequent - weekly.
With improvement the rate of treatment will be decreased till the end.

Cost of treatment

Osteopathic treatment costs € 60,- as flat rate for the therapist. It is important to realise that osteopathic treatment is not catered for by health insurance and must therefore be handled privately.
